I am a UK based freelance writer and photographer specialising in documentary, travel and adventure, but with an increasing portfolio in reportage, commercial and PR. Although nominally based in Sheffield in the north of England, I am frequently abroad working or climbing.
My professional background is Emap (now Bauer Media) where, working on Trail magazine, I was shortlisted for both Emap Writer of the Year and PPA New Journalist of the Year awards. For the past ten years, though, I have been freelance, and my work has appeared in publications such as the Independent on Sunday, The Times (London), The Saturday Telegraph Magazine, The Sunday Times Travel Magazine, Vanity Fair, Monocle, Geographical and Footprint guidebooks, amongst others. Commercial clients have included Rio Tinto, Orndance Survey, Lowe Alpine, RAB, the NHS, the Welsh and Scottish Tourist Boards and the Yes Consultancy.
Although producing complete editorial packages is what I specialise in, I am often commissioned to work as either photographer or writer depending on the needs of the title.
For clients in need of overseas commercial photography, I have pioneered a model that provides authentic travel and expedition photography at a fraction of the normal cost. More than a decade of adventurous foreign travel also means I can advise and organise shoots in stunning, off the beaten track locations.
